Research Presentations

We have all presented our research into the different briefs that we were interested in. I presented research into short films because I enjoy watching short films and I thought that it was a doable brief. I like the videos that I have referenced in my presentation and I believe that I would be able to recreate. I also showed example videos that I had found on the internet.

Jade made a presentation about music video research. This was one of the other briefs that I was interested in however I don't really know anybody in a band which would be something that I would want to include in my music video so I won't continue with this option.

Harry presented film trailer research. I didn't consider this an option and to be honest, I still don't think this is something I want to focus on. This is because the genres of film that I am interested in have many special effects that I don't think I would be able to duplicate.

Short Films Research

Research Meeting

We sat as a group and discussed the brief together. The three main topics in the brief that we liked were short films, movie trailers and movie videos. We each picked a topic to research to make a presentation for so we can present our information and research to each other. After that, we can decide what we are each going to do for the actual brief.

Preliminary Task Review

After re-watching the music video we created, I am quite happy with the outcome. The video was not as we originally planned however the finished product was still a decent music video with good references to other music videos. Because we used the song A team, we used a black and white effect for most of the video to duplicate the dark atmosphere that the song had because it is about drug use. At the start of the song we decided to switch between colour to show a sign of hope as we look up but then change it back to black and white as the rest of the song continues. We used small shots of us lip syncing like in 'Honey, I'm Good' but due to the A Team being a slower song, the shots were not as quick but they still jump cut to the next person lip syncing which is what we intended to happen. At the start, the close ups transition into one another like a merge from one person to another. For this to work nicely, we had to end the previous shot and start the next shot with both people looking in the same direction. I believed this worked well. Having the close ups in the instrumentals also looked good and gave the music video a bit of emotion. The camera work could have been better with use of a tripod and using a tripod could have allowed us to do our original idea of having the bodies and heads swap like in 'caravan of love' which is a shame it didn't work out but what we have now is still good in my opinion.

Preliminary Task Problem

When editing the video, I encountered a problem. At the time of filming, we didn't have access to a tripod so the footage was a little shaky. When the footage was stabilised, it zoomed to close to the people in the screen. Because the footage seemed to move, I was unable to keep the bodies and heads matched up. We then decided to change our plan. Rather than having the bodies switch with the heads, we used still close ups of use lip syncing the song with dramatic close ups of our faces for the instumentals. We also decided to switch between colour and black and white footage depending on whether the people were looking up and across or down.

We decided to pick A team by Ed Sheeran as the song to use for our music video. With the song being slow, it means we could use slow shots of dramatic close ups. We also liked the music video because of it being black and white which is an easily applied effect.

We like the idea of having multiple shots of various people lip syncing to the song rather than telling a meaningful story due to this being a smaller task and not being able to have the correct actors within the time. 

Caravan Of Love

We like the idea of being able to split the screen to show shots of more than one video at the same time. We want to be able to have the torso of one person with the head of another person lip syncing to the song. This was doable using iMovie and I had learned how to do it using online tutorials.

Preliminary Task Assigning Roles

I am the editor of the video due to having the most interest and knowledge of the software, iMovie. Although there are still things to learn about the software, I am more advanced than both Harry and Jade with editing so it was appropriate. I was also in the video as an actor because of having  small limited time to prepare actors for the video. We decided we should all be in it.

Jade and Harry worked together to make the storyboard. Jade drew the shots to use after discussion as a group of what to have. (There was no one person as the director. It was all discussed as a group). After that, we used the story board to film the project. Harry filmed all of the shots except for the shots he was in; Jade filmed them.
